Is this trip right for you?

  • You’ll spend both nights of the trip overnighting in 3-4 star accommodation in Kakadu National Park.
  • This trip requires a lower level of fitness, as it involves only some walking, allowing you to truly enjoy the surrounding nature. Some hikes are longer and more challenging than others. Please bring sturdy, comfortable walking shoes, minimal clothing, and some swim wear – there are some great waterholes to chill-out in.
  • Temperatures in the Top End can be extreme. During the day the weather can be hot (and the Australian sun is strong) so please bring appropriate clothing, use sun protection, a hat and drink plenty of water. In the evenings temperatures are warm-to-mild. There may be some mosquitoes after rains, so bring some repellent and light full-length clothing.
  • This trip has a strict luggage limit of 10kg in the luggage compartment, and an additional smaller bag that can be put under the seat. Excess luggage cannot be carried, however it can be stored at most Darwin accommodation providers.

Itinerary

Pick up’s from 8.00am from your nominated accommodation in Darwin. After a short stop at Bark Hut we continue along the Arnhem Highway into Kakadu National Park. We prepare a picnic style lunch while you can take in a the vistas across the Anbangbang Billabong. We continue deep into the park to some of the most significant artworks in Kakadu at Burrunguy (Nourlangie Rock).

Under the shade of the melaleuca and overhanging cliff faces, Burrungu provides a great opportunity to spend some time better understanding the rock-art galleries and the significance that the area has to the Binninj Peoples, dating back more than 20,000 years. We then take the short walk to Gunwhardewharde Lookout overlooking views to the floodplains and woodlands.

At our accommodation enjoy a swim in the resort’s pool followed by the Yellow Waters Sunset Cruise. On the cruise see a variety of wildlife including birdlife and crocodiles before the suns drops down behind the iconic floodplains.

Dinner at own expense.

We then let our 4WD truck do all the work as we drive to the Southern end of the park to Gunlom Falls – a large emerald-coloured waterhole hidden by the surrounding eucalypt and melaleuca trees. It’s a short distance to our first stop of the day; Cahill’s Crossing on the East Alligator River. The incorrectly named river is best known as the dangerous vehicle crossing through croc-infested waters, and the natural border between Kakadu and Arnhem Land.

We then drive to one of the most-known escarpments in the park, Ubirr. Spot some rock-art enroute the walking path, take the short incline to a rocky clearing, where you’ll enjoy un-parallelled 360-degree views. You’ll be able to look over Arnhem Land to the East and the Nardab Floodplains to the West.

We’ll depart the park, heading West towards Darwin, but enroute we’ll take the time to visit the bird-haven of the Mamukala wetlands, with our stop at the Humpty Doo Hotel for a refreshing drink, before arriving back in town. Estimated arrival time is 5.30pm
