Almost 80% of Australia’s population lives in the eastern states of Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland, so it’s not surprising the East Coast is considered a must-visit destination by tourists as well.
Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane all have heaps going on – thriving live music scenes, awesome galleries, delicious restaurants and bars, and great coffee – as well as their own iconic landmarks and distinct climates. And then there’s the rest of the East Coast, from Victoria’s winding Great Ocean Road to Queensland’s Great Barrier Reef, with tropical islands, lush forests and cruisy beach towns in between.

What to see on Australia’s east coast

Noosa
Home to one of the most Instagrammable beaches in the world (we’re talking white sands, aquamarine water and gently lapping waves), lush hinterland, and a rather fancy strip of boutiques, cafes and restaurants, Noosa is a must-visit on your East Coast adventure. Hike through the pristine national park (keep your eyes peeled for blue-tongued lizards, brush turkeys and wallabies), sip on a green smoothie – or pineapple cocktail – on fashionable Hastings Street, or slap on some 30+ sunscreen and kick back on the beach. They don’t call it the Sunshine Coast for nothing.

Byron Bay
If you’re chasing gorgeous beaches (featuring the occasional dolphin and whale), farmers markets, mouth-wateringly good organic meals and a laid-back environment, Byron Bay offers up the goods. Sitting just south of the Queensland border on the northern NSW coast, Byron – as it’s known to the locals – delivers epic scenery, including verdant forests, waterfalls and wildlife, making it an ideal walking spot; awesome water sports like sea kayaking, stand up paddle boarding and surfing; and a thriving local food scene. Grab a kombucha, pop on your sunnies and soak up the chilled-out beach vibes.

Sydney
Full of some of Australia’s most iconic landmarks – the Sydney Opera House, the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and stunning Bondi Beach – Sydney has got to be one of the most recognisable, and beautiful, cities in the world. Lace up your sneakers and walk the six-kilometre clifftop trail from Bondi to Coogee for epic coastal views, while away the day with a stroll (and some shopping) in Darlinghurst and Surry Hills, or catch the ferry across the harbour to Manly Beach. Decisions, decisions.
